Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the "Bharat Rannbhoomi Darshan Project" on 15th January, 2025 to mark the 77th Army Day. The Bharat Rannbhoomi Darshan Project is the project for Indian tourists or visitors to visit Battlefield, cemeteries, war memorial and museums.[1]

About the Project

  • Initiative by Indian Army.[2]
  • Main Aim - To boost battlefield tourism alongside the forward sites across the country's borders which have witnessed some military action in the past.
    • It also aims to educate and let the public know about their country's military history.
    • It also aims to promote the development of the Border Regions focusing on the pillars of infrastructure, communication, tourism and education.
  • The Army has shortlisted 77 sites with most of sites falling along India's borders with China and Pakistan.
  • Sites such as
    • Ladakh (Galwan, Doklam, Dras, Kargil, Siachen base camp)
    • Rajasthan (Longewala, Thar Desert)
    • Arunachal Pradesh (Bum La and Kibithu)
    • Sikkim (Nathu La)
  • The Defence Ministry in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism. These sites also be highlighted by the Ministry of Tourism as a part of the Incredible India campaign.

Battlefield Tourism

  • It is the practice of visiting war-related sites for historical study/information or sightseeing.
  • Sites include Battlefield, cemeteries, war memorial and museums.
  • Main Aim - To learn or know about the history and experience the emotional impact of the conflict.
  • Notable Examples - Kargil War Memorial in India, Gettysburg Battlefield and Pentagon is USA and sites of World War 2 such as Gallipoli, Pearl Harbor, Omaha Beach etc.
