Gangasagar Mela

Gangasagar is the confluence of the Hooghly River and the Bay of Bengal in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district. Recently, Chief Minister announced to construct a 5-km-long Gangasagar Setu across the Muriganga river to connect the mainland to Sagar Island.[1]

  • This mela held annually on Makar Sankranti.
  • Regarded as the Second largest Pilgrimage gathering after Kumbh.
  • This confluence is also called as Sagar Island.
  • Millions of People gather to take a sacred dip in the confluence of River Ganga and the Bay of Bengal and visit the Kapilmuni's ashram located on the Gangasagar.
  • This fair or mela also includes rituals, prayers, and cultural activities.
  • It is one of the largest religious fairs in India, with both spiritual significance and a sense of community celebration.
